The final point in my complaint is that the advisor to the Record should be admonished and then replaced. – Email from Fr. Jerome Tupa, May 4, 2011

This fall, Record advisor Patty Candella was replaced by Kelly Smith.

I am writing this to ask for a discussion and action by the SJU senate to end funding for the Record for one semester. This action should be taken in my view because of the egregiously inaccurate article [ View ] in the Record about the Abbey abuse situation. First of all the Record published a letter from Mr. Pat Marker [ View ] who was never a student at this university but whose false accusations and allegations have caused great harm to our Abbey and University. Secondly while publishing information should be encouraged and freedom of speech should be protected, in the case of the Record article they abused their rights of free speech by not publishing accurate information and thus harming the good name of the Abbot and the Abbey and its honest efforts to address sexual abuse issues. The article was accusatory and inflammatory in its tenor and statements. I for one citizen of this campus for over 47 years, a professor for more than 30 years, an FR since 1965 am deeply grieved by their article and feel that The Record in its final issue of the year should apologize to the monks and the Abbey in as bold letters as possible and then cease publication until 2012 as a penalty for this type of journalism which is only worthy of Fox News or the National Inquirer. The final point in my complaint is that the advisor to the Record should be admonished and then replaced. Thank you for your action in this matter.
