Student’s Letter to Abbot John Klassen
December 1, 2011
Dear Abbot Klassen,
It has come to my attention that the Board of Regents is gathering tomorrow to discuss an appropriate response to the Penn State scandal. There are a number of disturbing claims circulating on the internet and through student gossip about the history and current state of our own institution’s misconduct violations. In many instances, you have been named as a head figure in an alleged cover-up of a number of these violations. As a student, I am curious as to why our administration has not actively addressed these issues. It is unfair that we have to sift through gossip to understand a very serious problem that has apparently been occurring for many years. My colleagues and I have come to a conclusion about the course of action we would like our administration to take:
1) Full disclosure of alleged offenders on campus.
2) A public statement by the administration of the exact protocol that is being followed in current and future alleged abuse cases.
3) Make the prevention of abuse a main issue in the upcoming presidential selection.
Please discuss these three points with the board tomorrow. Hopefully you, as well as the other board members, can understand the student concern and confusion surrounding this issue. We would greatly appreciate a summary of the board’s response to the actions outlined above.
