Headmaster, Father Thomas Andert, Resigns

Father Thomas Andert, Headmaster of Saint John’s Preparatory School for the past six years, submitted his resignation, effective 1 June 1994, to Abbot Timothy Kelly early this fall.

He has served the past fifteen years in secondary school administration: three years as Dean of Students here, six years as President of Benilde-St. Margaret’s in Minneapolis, and a full term as Headmaster here for six years. In 1992, he received the Austrian Silver Cross of Merit in recognition of his work in the student exchange program between the preparatory school and Melk Abbey, Austria.

Citing the unusually taxing demands of the office, Father Thomas said that his changing career interests and energy levels prompted his decision, and that a fresh perspective and new direction will benefit the school in the future.

To achieve a smooth transition before he takes a sabbatical, Father Thomas made his announcement early. As a result, the monastic chapter has already discussed future needs and directions of the preparatory school and members have made a number of nominations of possible successors for the headmaster position. A search committee will make recommendations to Abbot Timothy in about a month.
